Welcome to episode 3 of Truckers Have Feelings. Most everyone knows a truck driver, either a family member, Friend, Friend of a Friend. I was talking to a fellow the other day whose father just recently retired from Long Haul trucking after 38 years. After 38 years of being on the road, travelling from place to place he was really proud of one main thing - he was accident free, not even one scratch all those years. Considering the hazards he faced each day and the near misses I’m sure he witnessed - not necessarily being his fault. After all the miles he drove, being accident free for 38 years is definitely something to be proud of. I have met other truckers just like this fellow and for good reason they are equally as proud of their accomplishments when it comes to being accident free. It says a lot about a trucker who can stay accident free for over 30 years. Accidents don’t mean it’s the truckers fault , there are public vehicles on our roads everyday that have distracted drivers more than ever these days .. crazy deadlines, cell phones, and lack of common sense plaques our roads of poor driving habits each day. Let's not forget about our weather both predicted and unpredicted that really plays havoc and creates higher risks of accidents or something going wrong. Another thing this fellow mentioned to me about his Dad was the inside of his rig was always neat, tidy and clean. When he got in his rig to drive, the boots came off and clean comfortable footwear went on. It reminded me of a situation I personally witnessed at our company yard in the summer of 1998. True story: I have met many truckers who were the same as this gentleman; they took great pride in keeping their rigs clean. If they allowed you in their rigs you were to take your boots off so the outside dirt didn't get on their carpets. Well in 1998 we had this dispatcher who was a very cocky little prick, he decided he wasn't going to respect one of our owner operators who took pride in the cleanliness of his rig - he actually thought he had the right to jump into the truckers rig with his outside shoes on - first things first somehow the dispatcher “Fell” to the ground - it was like a torpedo leaving it's tube... Now I'm not sure what exactly happen - my educated guesses is he probably didn't tie his shoe laces, you know what Im saying Right???? We ended up firing the dispatchers ass because he was always being rude to the drivers or making them feel like they didn't matter... He focused only on the pay cheque not caring about the truckers at all. For many of these drivers their rigs are their home and business on wheel. This was an eye opener for me as I didn't realize these men and women kept their rigs so clean and the importance of them driving in such a clean environment - too me this spoke highly of their characters and the way they treated their clients. I would like to leave on this positive note for this episode.
